WordPress - state of the art publishing customer content management system. Easy to install and use and has one of the best visual editing tool.

WordPress MU – Multi Blog version of Wordpress all managed in one place. Used in Wordpress.com with around 9 million users. Uses more server resources and more complex to install and manage. Blog admins cannot install their own Themes or Plugins. Not all plugins will work. Scales massively. Wordpress version 3 will be very much the same with Wordpress MU.

bbPress – Powerful and lightweight forum system. bbPres+MU – Shared user tables, Single sign-on, Shared themes, integrated one-to-many and many-to-many conversations, power to host a large community.

BuddyPress – Social network in a box, WPMU=set of Plugins+bbPress, Make your own Facebook, Enable the features that works for you

BackPress – Shared code library between WordPress and bbPress, provides common web app functionality, designed to be portable, familiar for WordPress developers, GPL licensed

GlotPress – The idea of of GlotPress is that is gives you a web-based, crow-sourced translations of web applications, uses standard gettext tools, built on BackPress

Markku Seguerra - WordPress in the Wild – Deployment, Performance, Optimization, and Security

What is the most effective way of deploying WordPress? 1. Download from wordpress.org, copying from existing install is troublesom, use local installer with important themes and plugins from official sources.

2. Performance – offload content (Amazon, Flickr, YouTube etc.), Use only necessary plugins, Use 3rd-party comments (Disqus, Intense Debate, etc), Beyond Wordpress – optimize MySQL (MyISAM only, query_cache tuning, etc), optimize PHP (limit extensions, memory allocation, use memchace,  etc), replace Apache.

3. Optimization – All in One SEO plugin, permalink settings, Analytics360 + Google Analyticator, WordPress.com Stats, Google XML Sitemaps, FD Feedburner/Feedburner Feedsmith, Broken Link Checker, Content is King – SEO can only do so much; it can only be as good as what’s on your blog.

4. Security

Content theft – use RSS Footer that will insert a link to your site so you can claim your content, Blog about it!, Resume creating good content, report to search engines, Report to host/ISP

WP vulnerabilities – more users invites more discoveries of flawed code, widespread use attracts more mischief, extensibility opens a back door, WP upgrades safe to keep it up to date

Remove “admin” username, change table prefix (wp_)m, Hide WP version, Secure /wp-admin/ with server passwords

My Wordcamp 2008 Experience

by ChiQ 15th September 2008    |    42 comments

My Wordcamp Philippines 2008 experience was a blast! I arrived in Manila a day before the big event for the Wordcamp Ingress. As a volunteer, I was assigned to take care of the Wordcamp Kits and assist in the Registration. During the ingress, I got to meet the Mindanao Bloggers group (organizers) and my fellow Volunteers. I stayed longer that day because I was having so much fun just trying to get to know everyone.. they were suprised that I actually had to travel from Cagayan de Oro to Manila just to join..

Check out more Pix Here (some are not mine.. thanks to melo, drew, shari, jehz.. and others for letting me steal them, lol).

So on the Big Day itself, I was totally energized and was up and ready for anything! I started with running through the badges given out to every camper during the registration.  Prepared the kits, around 400 bags I guess.. we counted it but I can’t remember the exact number anymore. During Lunch, I was this little creature getting in their way at the Entrance repeatedly saying “Badge pls, have it scanned and grab your lunch!” Lol!

Thanks to our Student Volunteers from the Computer Business Association and the Association of Information Management of the College of St. Benilde. Who made our lives easier.. I even managed to persuade some of them to join the fun world of Blogging!

The highlight of the event for me was to meet Filipino Bloggers and WordPress Enthusiasts.. An entire day talking about Page Rank, Google Adsense, Alexa Rank, DoFollow/NoFollow, Technorati etc.. etc.. never got me tired. I was with people who are in the same wave length as I am. Our jokes were very geeky and yet have remained very funny! I hope to be able to attend more Bloggers/Blogging Event in the future.. it wasn’t just a mere exchange of Business Cards or Website URL’s, rather it was about establishing solid friendships that could go along way. By the way, thanks for inviting me to plurk! Lol! I am now starting to get addicted to it.

Too bad though, I never got to join any sessions. I would have wanted to listen on Wordpress for Corporate Websites by Hans Koch. It’s a direction I’d love to take later on.. Mr. Hans, it was a pleasure to have finally meet you. Thank you for the compliments on my designs.. He was even kind enough to introduce me to Mr. Danny Quitoriano who in turn introduced me to Mr Wordpress himself, Matt. Yeahp, got to talk to Matt about what I do and my site. Gave him my business card and all.. as someone who supports WordPress, it’s truly a privilege to get to know the guy who created it.

DoFollow link love to my fellow volunteers  MeloGwen, Fitz , Jonnel, Shari, Paul, ReinJehz, Arbet, Arpee, Fritz.

Congratulations to the Organizers Blogie, Ria Jose, Migs, Drew, Batang Yagit, Juned for the successful event.

Lastly, you rock Matt Mullenweg! Don’t worry.. I’ll keep on releasing Free WordPress Themes on this site for everybody to download.

See you all on WordCamp 2009!

I am Joining WordCamp Philippines 2008!

by ChiQ 23rd July 2008    |    23 comments

I have finally registered for WordCamp Philippines 2008! I am indeed looking forward to this event because other than the fact that Matt would be gracing us with his presence, I also get to meet a lot of Filipino Bloggers that I truly admire and those I have made friends with online. This event is organized by Mindanao Bloggers, of which I am proud of since I am from Mindanao as well.

After filling out the registration form, I have also ordered the official WordCamp Philippines’ Shirt, which I hope to wear on the event. I chose the maroon color although I’d probably buy the blue one too! I also wish contribute all my WordPress Themes so that they can include it in the kit.
