Make Money Online: Freelancing
To Continue Downloading and Using my Themes for free, you are now required to Subscribe via RSS or Email . Thanks!
When I started making money online it wasn’t from blogging at all but rather from Freelancing. You see, blogging takes time and it might take a while before you can start profiting from your site. If you do take the freelancing route, it pays the bills right away.
There are lots of jobs available online for you to take on a per project basis. You only have to look at the right places. Here are my recommendations:
Online Forums
DigitalPoint – Specifically go to the Buy, Sell & Trade Section. You can write articles, design templates, create websites, post to forums, sell links.. and a lot more! On the dp forum, members rely heavily on iTrader ratings (positive and negative feedbacks) therefore, you must make sure that you provide what you promised to deliver or else you get a negative feedback and no one will bother hiring you.
SitePoint & TalkFreelance – Usually the kind of projects you get from these forum will give you a higher rate. Projects aren’t as abundant compared to DP but usually they fall into the bigger project scope.
Recommended Freelance Sites
Rentacoder.com – This freelance site caters primarily to the technical side such as programmers, coders, software engineers and IT professionals in general. Some projects could even last for several months.
Guru.com – This is a very large site with a million of registered users. Businesses who are looking to outsource their work to a global audience with minimal costs rely on this site. Opportunities are categorized on the Main Page of the site so it’s quite easy to look for projects you can take on.
Elance.com – Elance is another site you should definitely check out especially when you want to provide content services. Usually, the projects offered here are for writing articles, ghostwriting and copywriters.
Those sites I have listed above are enough to keep you busy and earn you a steady income. I’d like to share a few tips though from my personal experience:
1. Launch a site where you can showcase your Portfolio
- Ask permission from your clients, first.
2. Take Care of your Reputation
- Recommendation and Feedback Ratings matter
3. Overdeliver if Possible
- You easily get repeat clients this way
4. Do not give your work unless Clients Pay,
50/50 method usually works, they pay you 50% of your total payment, you give them the projects you have worked on. They pay the remaining 50%.
5. Be Honest and Reliable

Nice list
In my opinion, DP is the best. We can make lots of money with it just by answering questions. Do not spam or you will be banned.

I’m kind of surprised that you left GetAFreelancer.com off of your list. I have been using them for years and they are one of the best websites for hiring an experienced “whatever” on the fly for an affordable rate
Great post though, I’m going to have to check out those other websites.

Joined Elance and Guru before. But it seems to be hardly no work for basic account (free). Most of the clients prefer the higher level account (whatever the name is) which you need to pay.

Amazing how one can find a site like this just when you are about to give up searching-really great help for me-Rentacoder seems to be just what i wanted

I have been using Digital point and I must say this is what most of the blogger miss to find the easiest way to make good money.
21st February 2009 at 5:42 pm
Digital Point is a very cool site. I have met some very nice, friendly helpful techies and I have “picked their brains” quite a bit. I also use some freelance bidding services.
I prefer either ones that have a very low monthly fee or those that do not require payment up front. I prefer to keep my freelancing costs down as much as possible.
16th March 2009 at 7:55 am
I love DP for selling my articles there. I tried Elance but it didn’t work out for me yet. I am checking out Talkfreelance and Sitepoint at the moment, hoping to score some projects.

As a beginner, I’m starting with Adsense on my blog for monetization. But seeing probloggers like you who do not have any adsense ads, I get a little confused. I suppose it’ll change when my blog grows as well.

I’ve been working from home for some time now and it really is possible to make a great income. In order to find something that is legitimate, you must first understand what you are looking for (e.g. work or business opportunity).
Most online work requires you to have some sort of specialized technical skill sets. You should never pay to start an online job. Any site that requires you to pay to work is definitely a scam. On the other hand, if you are not technically qualified for most online jobs, then your best bet is starting your own home based business. Starting a business does require up front cost.
The quickest way I know to make some extra cash is by selling stuff on ebay or searching craiglist for work- these are normally only short-term fixes. I’ve tried them both and lost interest very quickly.

Hi. I came across this post and thought it offered good advice for people who are trying to break into freelancing. I also thought I might mention oDesk as an additional resource to your readers. I noticed a few people mentioned feeling like the job choices on some of the other sites aren’t too good if you aren’t a paying member. oDesk is completely free to join and apply, so it’s worth taking a look at.
Thanks for the great post!

I would like to leave a comment for 2 reasons:
1) does anybody knows or have used getafreelancer.com? I have used (as buyer) that sometimes and I feel the rates are lower that elance, for example, but I had issues with quality
2) Is it possible to really make good money as a freelancer (as a service provider?) Or is just as lousy as to have, in fact, a day job?
24th July 2009 at 1:29 am
ok thanks, very interesting… but I wonder if it is really necessary (mandatory) to use paypal to make money online… other ways to easily transfer money and accept credit cards?
